- Clementine - a fantastic free music player (open source) with versions on nearly all common platforms
- Jaangle - another fantastic free music player (open source)
- foobar2000 - an audio geek's dream player, but its UI is more sparse than in the others above
- Exact Audio Copy - a great, error-correcting free CD ripper (my favorite); paired with
LAME (recommended
build) and proper settings, it makes very nice rips
- CDex - a great free CD ripper (for many audio formats!)

Computers
- HS2
Solutions, Inc. - the consulting company I work for
- Take Command & TCC - indispensible command interpreters
for MS OSes from the makers of the venerable 4DOS & 4NT
- Eclipse - Okay, I have to admit it. I LOVE Eclipse for Java work, so it now has
to move to the top of my IDE/programmer's editor list for Java. Sorry,
ME & jEdit...
- Komodo - Komodo is the best IDE in my opinion for Perl, and I love using Perl
(and therefore Komodo) as often as possible. Komodo also supports other
"dynamic" languages such as PHP, Python, Ruby, and Tcl. I've only used
it for Perl but would use it for the others if/when I need them.
- Multi-Edit - my (next) favorite programmer's editor
- jEdit - the second-best free text editor I've ever seen, and it's portable
- UltraEdit 32 - a
few people around the office think this shareware editor is pretty cool
- Visual
SlickEdit - looks like a great programmer's editor, but I
don't use it (see others above!)
- VIM - excellent vi
clone that lives up to the name of "Vi IMproved"
- SourceForge.net -
lots of open source stuff; some faves: 7-Zip, CDex, AWStats, HTMLTidy, LAME, Open-source
ARJ, Trove
for Java, XDoclet, Jython,
Audacity
- The
Jakarta Project - fantastic source for open-source Java code,
esp. server-side (Struts, Tomcat, Log4j,
and lots more)
- Visual
C# / .NET stuff: log4net, NAnt, NUnit
- Ant - forget "make":
use Ant (or NAnt above) instead
- Dreamweaver - the best overall Web editor I've seen
- HomeSite - a terrific HTML code editor
- ActivePerl - Win32 version of Perl (and don't forget Log::Log4perl or CPAN or Perldoc)
- ActivePython - Win32 version of Python (or get Jython,
which is implemented as pure Java)
- Hacker
Jargon File -- good lexicon with lots of humor mixed in
- Linux.org , Linux.com
-
The Perl Journal
- AGREP - approximate grep
- Cygwin - a good
UNIX-like environment for Windows
Data
Compression and Encryption
- Maximum Compression - my favorite compression benchmark site
- ENCODE.RU Forums - an active forum of compression enthusiasts
- The Data Compression
Library - great set of information and links on many types of
compression
- 7-Zip - free, open-source utility that fully supports 7z, ZIP, GZIP, TAR, and
BZIP2, plus it can list and decompress RAR, CAB, ARJ, CPIO, RPM, DEB,
and SPLIT; also optionally uses Dmitry Shkarin's PPMd method (see here for a UNIX port). This is the main command-line archiver I
use every day.
- WinRAR
and RAR - RAR is a great command-line compressor that supports the flexible RAR
archive format. WinRAR is the GUI for it, and it supports many more
formats. This is the main GUI archiver that I use on a daily basis.
- The
PAQ Data Compression Programs - free, open-source programs
that tend to win the benchmarks at maximumcompression.com
- M Software Ltd. - Malcolm
Taylor's Home Page - home of WinRK, which is a great
compressor (see Maximum
Compression), although, sadly, he doesn't seem to maintain it
anymore
-
"Slim!"
archiver - very good; scores very well at the Maximum
Compression site
- Dmitry Shkarin's PPMd (and
a link to the newer DURILCA), but you'll need to use this
link or this
link if you don't know Russian ;-)
- Charles Bloom's Pages - lots of compression, plus some other stuff
- Info-Zip - portable, free, open-source ZIP utility
- PGP - Pretty Good
Privacy
- GPG - GNU Privacy Guard
